When it comes to the ultimate site for camping in Texas, Garner State Park truly has it all. There are over 300 campsites that are either primitive, have access to water or access to water and electricity. The park also has options to rent a screened shelter next to your campsite.

Visitors to Garner State Park can enjoy mountain biking, kayaking, hiking, swimming, fishing, exploring caves and more. While at the state park, those who wish to fish will not need a fishing license. The Frio River runs through the park and has beautiful cypress trees that border its edge. In the summer, campers gather for dancing and in late fall it’s one of the best places in Texas to see the leaves change.

Garner State Park is one of the highest demanding state parks in Texas when it comes to visiting for a day or a few days. Make your reservations to camp ahead of time online. Pets are allowed but not in the buildings or shelters and must stay on a leash.

Even though there are hundreds of campsites to choose from on property, campers have the opportunity to bring their RV and even rent a cabin. Some cabins come with or without a fireplace. Take advantage of the 16 miles of walking trails, easy lake access and the Eagle Eye Observatory. American Bald Eagles can typically be seen in the winter months.

Ask about when live music can be expected, and the Movie under the Stars event happens. There is also a guest services shop for snack and drinks and an onsite restaurant. Canoe and kayak rentals are available through Guest Services.

Highlights

Another beautiful park located on the water is Pace Bend Park. A great option when looking to enjoy the summer, the park has camping, swimming and is perfect for families. Campsites with electricity and water are available along with a fire right and BBQ pit. Primitive sites are available as well.

Enjoy camping on the cliffs that overlook Lake Travis. Other than swimming, guests can also enjoy hiking, biking and equestrian trails. The option to use their boat dock is sometimes available depending on lake levels.

Pets are welcome in the park as long as they stay on a leash. Camping fees are paid onsite and is cash only. Go swimming on the parks beach or go cliff jumping at your own risk.

Kickapoo Cavern State Park

When looking to camp at this unique state park, RVs are welcome but only if they are 36 feet long or less. Guests will have full hookup at their site with sewer, electric and water. They will also have a fire ring or upright grill, a picnic table and a lantern post.

When visiting Kickapoo Caverns State Park, there are many things in the park to keep visitors entertained. Inside the park you can hike, mountain bike, explore the caves and even see bats migrate in the warm months. The biggest highlight is the guided cave tours on Saturdays, and reservations are required.

Pets are allowed inside the state park but are not allowed in the buildings or on the cave tours.

When spending the summer in Texas, the best camping can be found with plenty of options to go swimming. Krause Springs is a fantastic private property that is family owned and very unique to Texas. Campers are free to set up their tent anywhere within the designated area, and in the peak of the summer it can get crowded.

The property has 32 natural springs with the water staying at a constant 68 degrees. Campers and those visiting for the day can enjoy the concreted pool that is constantly being filled from the natural spring, a waterfall and a large swimming hole. Fishing in the lower parts of swimming hole is allowed but must be away from swimmers.

Pets are not allowed, and service animals must be approved. During the winter, Krause Springs temporarily closes for maintenance.

Hill Country State Natural Area

Trails vary in difficulty, from gentle paths through wildflower-filled meadows to more challenging routes that ascend the hills and provide sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

When camping in the state park, only primitive campsites are available. Some campsites you can access easy by a quick walk, and others you must hike to. The walk-in sites have water, a picnic table, fire ring and a chemical toilet nearby. The hike-in sites are very limited with accommodation and vary from a 2–3-mile hike.

Lost Maples State Natural Area

Highlights

A visit to Lost Maples State Natural Area offers an escape into one of Texas’ most picturesque natural settings. Known for its striking fall foliage in November, the park is home to the Uvalde bigtooth maples, which create vibrant displays of color during the autumn months.

The park has over 2,900 acres, and more than 10 miles of trails. Explore limestone canyons, shaded woodlands, and scenic overlooks. Pets are allowed inside the park but must stay on a leash.

There are 50 primitive campsites to stay at within the park that you must hike to. There are no accommodations at the primitive sites, and you must carry all trash back with you.

If you wish to camp but don’t wish to have a primitive approach, campsites with electricity are available along with back-in RV parking. These sites come with a picnic table, fire ring, water, 30-amp hookup, nearby restrooms and a shade shelter.

Best Time to Camp in the Hill Country

When it comes to camping in Texas, timing is everything. Personally, my favorite time for camping in Texas is March through early May. During this period, the weather is mild, bluebonnets are blooming, and the campgrounds are less crowded, making it an ideal time for both exploration and relaxation. Check for when the local county’s will have their spring break, however so you can avoid those peak weeks.

Summers bring triple-digit temperatures, which can be tough to deal with, especially for those tent camping. However, if you love swimming, summer is when Texas campgrounds near rivers and lakes can be the perfect escape. Just be prepared for larger crowds during this peak season when kids are out of school. Consider visiting in August to October with the except of Labor Day Weekend.

For those looking to escape the heat, the fall and winter months from November to February offer some of Texas best camping conditions. Mild temperatures make it the perfect time to gather around a campfire and enjoy the peacefulness of Texas Hill Country camping without the summer heat.
