Lost Maples State Park is located inside the small town of Vanderpool, a little over 1.5 hours west of San Antonio, Texas. When is the best time to visit

Many people journey to Lost Maples State Park to see the red, orange and yellow fall foliage from the rare big-tooth maple trees. It’s a magical time of the year, but the park gets very busy and reservations fill up fast. Stay informed by using the state park’s fall foliage report.

Lost Maples State park has breathtaking mountainous views you’ll enjoy all year long. Hike your way up to view the dense green woods that cover the Hill Country as far as the eye can see. Since the summertime can easily bring triple digit temperatures, always bring extra water and electrolytes while exploring the park. I love to do most of my Texas hiking in the late fall to early spring for the best weather conditions. No matter the time of the year, always make reservations before your visit.

What to Do While at Lost Maples

Hiking through the shaded and scenic woodlands is very popular at Lost Maples State Park. All trails are well marked and heavily rocky, so reliable boots are recommended. My favorite hike is the East Trail. You’ll see the famous Monkey Rock and then a large grotto. When the leaves change in mid November, you’ll pass by several big-tooth maple trees that turn lovely shades of yellow, orange and red. Click trail map to view a detailed layout of the park.

Cellphone service is very limited, but if you continue up the steep hill of East Trail to the scenic overlook you’ll have better luck getting a signal. Continue down the path and you will pass by the day-use pond. Spend an afternoon fishing bass, trout and catfish in this scenic clear water pond. If you don’t have a fishing license, there’s no problem. You’re not required to have a fishing license inside a Texas state park.

Lost Maples RV and Camping

The closest lodging near Lost Maples State Park where you can set up a tent or park your RV is Lost Maples RV and Camping. Only a 5 minute drive from the state park, it a great option if the state park is full. It’s also great if you’re wanting more privacy from the crowds. Restrooms nearby are open 24 hours each day, and most RV and camping areas come with fire pits, grills, and picnic tables.

All RV sites are gravel roads, and the ideal level to set up. The property has 25 back-in only sites provided with 20/30/50 amp options and full water and sewer hookups. The price per night for an RV hookup is $38.

If you’re looking for a quiet place for primitive camping, the parks has 8 designated spots. If you still would like to tent camp, but want access to water and electricity, you may reserve an RV site for a slightly higher price than primitive camping. To primitive camp, the price is $12 per night. The price to tent camp at a RV site is $24 per night.

If you’re hoping to find options for Lost Maples cabin rentals, the property has 7 cabins to choose from. Staying in one of the cabins with a Hill Country backdrop is a great option to escape the outside elements. Each cabin comes with a queen size bed, futon, kitchen and a heating and cooling system. Critters on the Frio

When looking for a place to park your RV that has different accommodations near Lost Maples State Park, Critters on the Creek is a great option. A 34 minute drive from the state park, you’ll have 9 RV sites to choose from with options to either pull-through or back in. All spots have 30/50 amps on a gravel site and many have great shade.

If you’d like to rent a cabin, Critters on the Creek has 17 different cabin options on the property that can sleep anywhere from 8 guests to 15 guests. My favorite is the Buffalo Creek and Pearly Creek cabins for their covered porches overlooking the creek with their modern cabin vibe.

Take a moment to relax as you swim in the park’s outdoor pool that includes a hot tube and small waterslide for children. Also grab your camera and don’t miss your chance to see the famous Bald Cypress Tree. Located on Buffalo Creek in the park, it is said to be the Largest Tree in Texas. Take advantage of their off peak season from October to March. The cabins are pet friendly, however there is a $50 pet fee for each pet. River Bend On The Frio

While looking for a RV site and lodging near Lost Maples State Park, The Riverbend on the Frio is only 34 minutes away. It is one of best places to relax after exploring the state park. With being right on the edge of such a gorgeous location on the Frio river, you’ll find yourself spending every holiday here.

While staying on the property, check out the playground, beach volleyball area and a disc golf course. A big detail that I appreciate is that they have adjusted their property’s lighting fixtures to promote night-friendly skies. This will allow you to get the most out of your star gazing experience.

Throughout the property, you have over 30 different types of RV areas with fire rings and a picnic table described as Riverfront, Indian Mound, Pecan Bottom, Hilltop RV and Premium Pavilion. There are so many to choose from with different price points and full hook up to electricity only options. Search through the different RV campsites to find the perfect spot for your Hill Country vacation.

Also available on the property are cabins and motel rooms that are pet friendly. There is a $25 fee per pet, and a security deposit of $250 due upon arrival. You’ll need to bring your own sheets, towels, and paper towels but the motel and cabins have full kitchens for guests to use. During the peak season prices range from $175- $240 per night and sleeps 5-8 guests depending on location.

Fox Fire Log Cabins

When looking for accommodations near Lost Maples State Park, Fox Fire Log Cabins is a 3 minute drive away. Located near the Sabinal River, enjoy fishing and swimming along with a large playground, basketball hoop and volleyball net. My biggest takeaway from the property is the incredible views you get right outside your cabin door.

My favorite cabin for an intimate space and amazing views is Buena Vista. This affordable cabin is my ideal getaway for a quiet and peaceful weekend away.

If you’re looking for a large log cabin with an indoor fireplace and fenced in yard for the dogs to roam, the Main House is a perfect getaway spot that sleeps up to 10 guests. Listen to the sounds of the river as you relax on the swinging bench. Also available to rent is an adorable two story Texas farmhouse. The Woodland House sleeps up to 10 guests and has gorgeous view of Hill Country mountains from the back porch.

With 7 different cabins on the property, you’ll find time to rest and relax. Most cabins have either a deck or a porch with a great outdoor space, and pet friendly options are available to specific cabins. There is a $10 fee for each pet per night and a $50 pet deposit. The Lodges at Lost Maples

Beautiful and luxurious lodging near Lost Maples State Park is what you’ll find at The Lodges of Lost Maples. The property has 5 separate cabins only 11 minutes away from the state park. Each cabin features a full kitchen, wood burning fireplace, an outdoor space with mountain views, hammocks, and fresh linens.

My favorite is the Red Rooster House for it’s rustic style and intimate setting. It’s the perfect cabin to stay during the cooler months to host at most 4 guests. After a day of hiking and leaf peeping in the state park, settle down on a comfy couch in front a warm fire and read a book.

The cabin, Solomon’s Den, is also a wonderful choice. As you sip your complimentary bottle of wine, unravel from all stress under the high-vaulted ceilings in the perfect cabin vibe. Rates for cabin rentals range from $175-$185 per night.

All cabins are “unplugged” as there is no cellphone service, computers or Wi-Fi. Bring board games, puzzles, books and more as you take time to decompress. All cabins come with a TV with a DVD player and a small selection of movies. There is also a no pet policy during your stay at the cabin.

Start planning your weekend getaway and stay at River Bluff Cabins and Lodges. Inside this lodging near Lost Maples State Park you’ll find all the comforts of home tucked away deep in the Hill Country. Featuring a pool and splash pad, you’ll find yourself decompressing under the warm Texas sun. With Lost Maples State Park only 33 minutes away, stay at one of many cabins and enjoy a relaxing getaway.

With over 20 different lodges and cabins to choose from, you’ll absolutely find one that best suites you during your stay. Each cabin comes with a full kitchen and is pet friendly with a fee of $20 per dog per day.

For a getaway that the whole family will enjoy, book The Cypress Lodge. It has so much room for the 14 people it can sleep to spread out. It embodies everything I think of when it comes to staying in a Texas lodge. I can’t get over the views you get of the Frio River from inside and outside the lodge.

My next absolute favorite is Cabin 1 for it’s beautiful overhanging deck that sits above the clear waters of the Frio river. It is the perfect place to sit with coffee in the morning and start the day.

When bringing your large family, consider reserving the pavilion that can seat up to 150 guests for a special event or dinner. If you forget anything, the Office Store has extra supplies to ensure you have an amazing stay.

Unique Places To Stay

Circle H Lodge

Come and explore this amazing ranch in Leakey, Texas. Circle H Lodge is a beautiful option for lodging near Lost Maples State Park. Only a 35 minute drive away, and will be an amazing and private experience for the whole family. Come to the ranch and find yourself tucked away, and surrounded by quiet views of Texas Hill Country. The property is also a working ranch that has native and exotic wildlife to see, so you’ll have to leave your pets at home.

Bring your swimsuits and head to the easily accessible and private spring fed pool. Try out the rope swing,or hang out under the shaded patio area with umbrellas and concreted tables. Sip on a cocktail as the water keeps you cool on a hot summer day.

If your desire to hike is not over after exploring Lost Maples, Circle H Ranch has easy and challenging hiking trails on property that you can learn more about during your stay. As you take a walk to the gate, you’ll easily see animals like zebras, wildebeest, red deer and more.

Different Options to Stay

There are 2 different places to rent on the property. The historic Lodge is a two-story rock house that was built between 1920-1930. The Lodge sleeps 16 guests and provides everything you may need for your stay from a full kitchen, towels and linens. Stay comfortable with their central heating and air, or even get a fire going in the wood burning fireplace.

The Guest House is single story that sleeps 14 guests. With the same accommodations as the Lodge, it’s another great option for smaller sized families. It comes with a fantastic covered outside patio, perfect for when you want to enjoy your meals with a view.

When visiting the ranch, you are far from city lights. The best things to do at night, besides a campfire, is to do some of the best uninterrupted star gazing in Texas. With so many extra accommodations near Lost Maples State Park at Circle H Ranch, it’ll soon become your favorite destination to bring the family together for quality time. Tree House Utopia

Hoping to fulfill a childhood fantasy of staying in a treehouse? You’re luck, because Tree House Utopia is calling your name! A 23 minute drive away, this woodland styled lodging near Lost Maples State Park is a beautiful and luxurious retreat.

The perfect way to glamp in the Hill Country that gives you nature vibes without dealing with the elements. There are 4 treehouses to choose from with small kitchenettes, outdoor seating overlooking pond views, incredible woodworking details and unique whimsical designs.

Each treehouse is built around large cypress trees and have a feature or a design that you can easily obsess over. From the claw foot tubs, stain glass windows, built in bookcases or cozy bedrooms you will easily forget that you are up in the trees.

Chapelle is one of my favorites because it has a strong classic angelic theme that reminds me of a being inside a beautiful church. With its tall gothic windows, candles and dark wood it also gives a heavy spa-like feel. The Chateau is also an obvious choice to stay. It’s the largest of all the treehouses being two-story’s tall, over 400 square feet and having 2 separate entrances. It has a spacious indoor and outdoor layout and a gorgeous spiral staircase that leads you to the bedroom.

Rates

There is a 2 night minimum for staying in the treehouses and prices range from $475-$575 per night. Pets and children under 18 will have to sit this one out. With each treehouse sleeping 2 guests, it’s the perfect romantic getaway.

Affordable Hotels and Inns Near Lost Maples State Park

Historic Leakey Inn

While searching for hotels near Lost Maples State Park, consider staying at the Historic Leakey Inn. While searching for locally owned and affordable lodging in the area, this property is my favorite. The inn is a 27 minute drive from the state park, and offers cozy rooms with a rustic Texas style.

Enjoy your stay as you head to the pool to soak in Texas sun and peaceful moments during your perfect Hill Country getaway. If you’re looking for a bite to eat or a drink, you don’t have to look far. Next to the inn is The Back Porch Bar opened for lunch and dinner Wednesday-Friday with live music on Friday nights.

Rates

Established almost 100 years ago, learn about the history inside this charming family owned property while you settle into one of the dozen inn room options or cabins. Inn room stays under $100 include Laurel Inn, Casita Inn and Winecup Inn. All other rooms and cabins range from $110 to $125 per night.

The Historic Leakey Inn is pet friendly, and actually has their family dog Max greet guests at the front desk. There is a $20 fee for each pet per day, and pets over 35 pounds must be approved. To learn more details about their pet policy, click here.

Sabinal River Lodge

Located in Utopia, the Sabinal River Lodge is a 20 minute drive away and a great option while searching for locally owned hotels near Lost Maples State Park. Unwind in the quiet area as you relax on the large and covered community back porch overlooking the clear waters of the Sabinal River. Each room has a fully stocked kitchenette with a cook top and small refrigerator. The property also has outdoor BBQ pits and picnic tables.

Enjoy the sounds of the calm river where you’ll have private access to swim and fish. Bring your kayak or tubes to boat and float on the clear water right outside your room. The area has experienced severe droughts over the years, so swimming may be limited depending on conditions. If the river is too shallow, explore Utopia Park near the dam on the Sabinal river where you can swim, fish, kayak and more.

Rates

The lodge has 2 levels and a total of 6 rooms with a king or 2 queen size beds. Pets are not allowed in or on the property, and smoking is not allowed inside facilities. All rooms are a rate of $135, except during peak season. Be sure to stop by Lost Maples Café for dining out, and Postal Brews for coffee and treats.

River Inn Resort and Conference Center

If you’re looking for an affordable resort-styled hotel with fantastic river views, look no further than River Inn Resort and Conference Center. With a hotel that offers so many accommodations near Lost Maples State Park, it’s the vacation that keeps on giving. Only 32 minutes from the state park, settle in after a day of hiking and relax in a rocking chair or lounge chair on one of the large open porches overlooking the water.

This lodging near Lost Maples State Park is the perfect paradise with several amenities and private access to the Guadalupe river that even has a floating dock and a waterslide. Spend your summer days on the water swimming, canoeing, paddle-boating or fishing. The property also has a tennis court and outdoor beach volleyball area that can be set up upon request. Fire up one of the property’s outdoor charcoal grills and set up dinner on one of their picnic tables for the whole family to enjoy.

For the cooler months, grab a blanket and a hot drink. Cozy up in front of an outdoor fireplace and listen to the sounds of the waterfall from the dam. Kids can entertain themselves inside the family room and play ping pong, air hockey and arcade games all in front of a fireplace. The property also has a private room ideal for large dinners or events to host at most 50 people.

Rates

In my experience, I would visit during the off season from January to mid May to get the best rates. The price for a studio and a 1 bedroom range from $120-$140 per night and sleeps 4 people. A 2 bedroom space ranges from $155-$175 per night and sleeps up to 6 people. The price during the peak season appear to double that price. Also, all pets will have to stay home during your visit to The River Inn Resort and Conference Center.

While searching for hotels near Lost Maples State Park that are nationally known and won’t break the bank, my recommendation would be the Best Western Bandera Suites and Saloon. Located in Bandera, Texas only a 43 minute drive away, this pet friendly hotel offers guests free breakfast, fitness center and a cool modern Texas cowboy theme. The hotel also provides a charging station for your EV, business center and laundry facility.

Also in Kerrville, TX is the Quality Inn and Suites. Enjoy your stay at this very affordable and pet friendly hotel. Other perks you’ll enjoy during your stay include free breakfast and relaxing in the indoor heated pool with spa.

Also available in Junction, TX is the Best Western Dos Rios hotel. This is a great option if you are needing a pet friendly hotel that also has free breakfast, a pool, and a fitness center.

No Pet Policy

A little less than an hour from Lost Maples State Park in Kerrville, TX is the gorgeous Inn of the Hills Hotel. When walking into the lobby, you’ll immediately see a beautiful stone spiral staircase that leads you to room options of a double queen or a king room. If you need more space, the hotel even offers a room with a loft. You’ll have to leave the animals at home, but the inn is walking distance to the Guadalupe river. It also includes a full service restaurant and a pub with the only dance hall in Kerrville featuring live music on the weekends.

If you’re staying in Junction, Texas hotels near Lost Maples State Park are an hour from the park and a little over an hour and a half from San Antonio, TX. Hotels in the area include the Holiday Inn Express and Suites that offers free breakfast, a swimming pool, business center and a fitness center. There is a no pet policy, and is a smoke free facility.
