Lost Maples State Natural Area

Lady Bird Lake

Weekdays and in the cooler months the river is quiet and peaceful. In the summer, however, certain spots can be congested and turn into a spectacle.
Places like Party Island, named so by the locals, is an area where the younger crowd gather to socialize and drink outside of Barton Creek. Congress Bridge at sunset can also see a large crowd that stick around to see the display of 1.5 million bats emerge from the bridge from April to November. Those on the water who are looking for some space for themselves, will have no problem on the 6 mile stretch of the lake.

Medina River

Visit a Castle
When picturing a castle, typically Texas is not the next thing that comes to mind. Surprisingly, there are a few castles throughout Texas. Unlike the castles seen abroad, the castles in Texas are probably not even 100 years old. After visiting Europe, a few Texans were so inspired by what they saw oversees, they decided to make their own.
Falkenstein Castle
One of the most magical things to do in the Texas Hill Country is to experience a castle. Falkenstein Castle is a private residence, and was inspired by the Bavarian castle, Neuschwanstein. It is 14,000 square feet and sits on 113 acres.
Once available for tours, Airbnb rentals and weddings, the castle at this time is not open to the public due to upkeep. Next time in Burnet, keep your eyes peeled for a distant glance at this magnificent home.

Swimming and Tubing

Barton Springs Pool
This spring-fed, concreted pool is one of the most popular swimming holes to visit in all of Texas.
A three acre pool with views of the Austin skyline makes Barton Springs Pool a true summer destination. The iconic and local favorite is open year round, and maintains a 68° temperature.
Parts of the pool are so shallow, visitors can walk into the chilly water, and other parts reach up to 18 feet deep where a diving board is located. Life guards are available each day, except on Thursdays. Bring large towels to set up a spot on the hill to sun bathe.
Guadalupe River
There are several ways to enjoy a day on the water of the Guadalupe River. Relax in the cool water to swim, float in a tube, paddleboard or kayak while surrounded by amazing landscapes. There is a section of the river that is part of the Texas State Parks. The river is over 200 miles long, and there are plenty of places to pick and choose from when entering the water.
For floating down the river, most locals float the Horseshoe Loop. It’s a part of the river that has a wide curve that starts at one side of the FM 306 bridge, and ends at the other side. It’s an easy indicator when to jump out of the river, and it avoids paying for shuttle fees. The length of this part of the river is 1 mile long, and depending on water levels it can be a 1-2 hour float.
To enjoy a longer float of 4 miles and a 5-6 hours float, consider using one of the many outfitters like Tube Haus for tube rentals and shuttles.
Comal River
The Comal River has to be the most popular locations for tubing in the Hill Country. Visitors come from all over Texas to tube down the lazy river, and especially to slide down the 3 famous tube chutes. The chutes are used almost like waterslides. The first one is the biggest and the longest one. The next 2 chutes are much shorter and quick.
On the weekends, the chutes become so crowded that there are occasionally people helping organize floaters by directing them to the chute. If groups begin to cluster while trying to become untangled before entering the chutes the scene can get very chaotic. The best time to visit is during the week or as early in the morning as possible.
For the longest float of 4-5 hours depending on water levels, use Landa River Trips for tube rentals and shuttle rides.

Star Gazing
Out in the country, the Texas stars seem to shine so bright. However, there are special places in the Hill Country gazers can clearly see the Milky Way!
International Dark Sky Association educates and practices the conservation of reducing light pollution around the world. Texas has partnered with this association, and also has developed a program of their own.
The Dark Skies program is part of the Texas State Parks. It’s goal is to educate, raise awareness and encourage stargazing inside the state parks by leading star parties with guided constellation tours.
The majority of the state parks continue to raise awareness and host nightly events. Texas has 4 dark sky parks, with 2 being in the Texas Hill Country.
Enchanted Rock
Seeing the true night sky is like no experience compared to all the things to do in the Texas Hill Country. Star Parties begin in March and are normally hosted by a park ranger. The ranger will tell stories about the stars and constellations while visitor’s eyes can adjust. Telescopes are provided to get a magnificent glimpse into our galaxy.

South Llano River State Park

There are over 80 wineries in the area, and many are found on HWY 290.

Becker Vineyards
A wonderful way to start a Fredericksburg tour of all the wineries, is to first visit Becker Vineyards. The winery is styled as a 200 year old German stone barn in tribute to the strong German heritage of Fredericksburg. With 66 acres of vineyards that harvest 11 variations of grapes, their abundance of different wines to sip while overlooking the estate is incredibly charming.

Longhorn Caverns
While exploring the Texas Hill Country, make reservations to tour a cavern that was created by an underground river. The Cavern Walking Tour is 1.1 miles long and is a great place to learn about Texas history and geology.
Part of the cavern was open to the public in 1932. The history of the cave is fascinating, and the tour explains the how the cave became safe to explore.
The CCC came to this Texas State Park in 1934, and there was large amount of excavation needed to make the cavern safe to enter. After they removed over 3,000 dump trucks worth of rocks, mud and other material by hand, they were able to to clear out the caverns for everyone to enjoy.
Inner Space Caverns

The caverns are incredibly preserved, and full of historical findings that has something to interested everyone.

Government Canyon State Natural Area

Stop by the very unique Frontier Times Museum that seeks to preserve the history of the county. Once a publishing house for the local newspaper and Frontier Times, it is now a museum with a wide range of different collections.
Inside the museum, visitors will see Cowboy history that pays tribute to rodeo legends with some of their priced possessions on display. There is also a strange and eccentric collection that looks like it belongs in a circus side show. The original museum owner and printer preserved his own unique collection starting in the 1920’s. Visitors will surely have lots of fascinating relics to observe in this one of a kind museum.
Eat at Old Spanish Trail Restaurant and 11th Street Bar
Stop in one of the oldest restaurants dating back over 100 years! The Old Spanish Trail Restaurant, or locally known as O.S.T, was once a grocery store, a dance hall and is now locally famous for it’s strong cowboy theme and good southern food.
Sit at the bar on a real saddle, or head over to the salad bar that is a real western wagon. It’s an amazing place to see local cowboys and eat one of the largest chicken fried steaks.
To see many of the local cowboys gathering for dancing and getting drinks, head over to 11th Street Cowboy Bar. A saloon styled bar with a large outdoor area in the back. Grab a partner and 2-step on the dance floor. Wednesday night is very popular for a special reason. National Museum of the Pacific War
Visit the National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg and learn about WWII history. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and is a Smithsonian Affiliate
It is the only museum in the United States that focuses on educating and teaching the history of the Pacific Theater, the time of war in 1941-1945 between the United States and Japan while fighting throughout the Pacific Ocean.
Bullock Texas State History Museum
Rich with Texas history, this impressive museum is located in downtown Austin. The Bullock Texas State History Museum has interactive experiences, several hundred permanent artifacts and rotating galleries. Learn the history of Texas from the Native American tribes that traveled through Texas and when the European settlers arrived in the 1600’s.
There’s also WWII history and information about the geology of Texas. Rotating exhibits include the study of sharks and Austin City Limits television series and the artists who performed. The Museum of Western Art strives to preserve the American Western heritage of cowboys, settlers and Native Americans. It’s goal is to authentically exhibit what life would have been like.
The museum has a 6,000 volume research library focusing on western history and art, along with several bronze statues.

Inks Lake State Park
When looking for a state park that has so much to do, consider a visit to Inks Lake State Park. Visitors come to the park excited for fishing, camping, hiking, boating, kayaking and especially swimming. Many even visit near the Devil’s Waterhole for a chance at rock jumping from over 10-feet high.
If the water level is high enough, check out the waterfall at Valley Spring Creek. Stay overnight while tent camping or rent a cabin inside the state park. Colorado Bend State Park
Tucked away deep in the northern part of the Hill Country in a small town called Bend, is Colorado Bend State Park.
The state park is the perfect place for hiking, biking, fishing, caving and swimming swim without running into crowds that you may see at other Texas State Parks.
Surrounded by gorgeous hill country views, visitors can enjoy multiple spring fed pools off of Spicewood Springs trail.
One of the biggest highlights of the park is seeing the 70-foot waterfall, Gorman Falls. It may be hard to see if water levels in the area are low.
During the late winter and spring months are the best time to pay it a visit.

Blanco State Park
A Texas State Park that is a great place to visit in the summer to take a dip in is Blanco State Park. Very popular in the summer, it is a spring fed park with lots of room to swim. To visit the park, make sure to make reservations in advance.
There are 3 falls that create different sections to swim in. The dams in the state park were created by the CCC. They were able to transform the area into amazing swimming holes for the enjoyment of future generations. With rides like Dragon’s Revenge and the Boogie Bahn Inland Surf Ride, spending the day outside at a waterpark has to be at Schlitterbahn Waterpark in New Braunfels.

The yurts are temperature controlled, and include a queen sized bed, Wi-Fi and a coffee maker. Yurts do not come with a bathroom, but are a short walk away.

Explore Waterfalls
The best time of the year to see waterfalls in Texas is between October and June when the area has had some rain. There are many locations that can have waterfalls, but might be a rare sight unless water levels are high. The waterfalls below have more consistent water levels to better spot a Texas waterfall.
Pedernales Falls State Park
An extremely popular waterfall in the Texas Hill Country is at Pedernales Falls State Park in Johnson City. Not only is there a beautiful waterfall to see up close, there are actually three sections that look very different from each other.
To see the falls, visitors will need to hike the easy Pedernales Falls Trail that is a .6 mile out and back trail. There is an overlook to see the full falls, or each can be seen up close. When the water is calm, a natural turquoise pool forms at the base before more waterfalls are formed from the Pedernales River. No matter the time of the year, the falls are always worth a visit.
Krause Springs
Inside this family-owned property, Krause Springs in Spicewood are 32 natural springs that give life to a 15-foot waterfall. The water falls from a cliff covered in moss and ferns and fills a swimming hole where swimmers can see the waterfall up close.
If swimmers would like to see a cave, they can go through the waterfall to see a small formation. Cypress trees border the shore with boulders for guests to sit on across the swimming hole to view the waterfall. Above the waterfall is a concreted swimming pool fed from a spring with 68 degree water temperatures year round.
Crockett Garden Falls
To see the waterfall at Crockett Garden Falls requires a 5 miles hike on the Goodwater Trail Loop in Georgetown. The closest way to begin the hike to the falls is to start at Cedar Break Point. The trail gives hikers amazing views of Lake Georgetown before reaching the waterfall. Hikers will have access to the lake until the trail moves higher towards the top of the cliffs.
After a freeze, the waterfall that was once a dome-like shape covered in ferns broke off the wall it was attached to. It has now transformed into a beautiful new waterfall for those that will hike to enjoy it.
Texas White House and Airforce One
Visit a part of American history by seeing the Texas White House and the Air Force One 1/2 at Lyndon B. Johnson State Park and Historic Site. Lyndon B. Johnson was the 36th President of America, and his former home and property was donated to the National Park Service in 1972. While doing a self-tour of the park, visitors will see everything from his childhood home to the school he was taught in.
One of the most exciting things to see is the Texas White House. Open for guided tours, the house was used as the President’s private home where members of his cabinet, world leaders, or the joint chief of staff would meet to discuss topics concerning the nation. Inside the house, the original desk the President would work at and his office furniture stay preserved as it was in the 1960’s.
Also on property is a small private plane under a hanger that the President would refer to as “Air Force One 1/2” because of its size. The President preferred using the smaller plane when traveling after creating his own private landing strip on his property. It also was easier to land in other small airports rather than using the actual Air Force One plane that is a large and highly customized Boeing 747-200B. Visitors can go inside the plane, and can also see the president’s vintage car on display nearby.

Bats
Seeing millions of bats suddenly emerging into the sky should be on everyone’s Texas Hill country bucket list. Texas is home to 33 species of bats throughout the state.
The notable Mexican free-tailed bat is especially famous for forming massive colonies in caves, bridges, and buildings from Spring to late Fall before migrating.
Learn about how these insect eating mammals are a treasure in Texas, and extremely important to the areas they inhabit.

Congress Bridge
No trip to Austin is complete without seeing the bats coming out of the downtown Congress Bridge. Around 1.5 million bats make this bridge their home, and is considered the worlds largest urban bat colony. The deep spaces between the beams inside the bridge make for a perfect home for bats to roost.
There are plenty of vantage points, and ways to see the bats when they leave the bridge at sunset to feed off insects, like mosquitoes. A free way to see the bats is to stand on the sidewalk on top of the bridge. Claim a spot at least 20 minutes before sunset when the crowd gets heavy.
There are also guided kayaking tours and boat tours that will give information about the bats and position tourist in the perfect spot to see them. The bats are wild animals so the time they come out of the bridge can fluctuate.
Insider Tip: Call a local tourist company that focuses on the bats and see what their current behavior has been like and if they’ve been easily spotted.

Bracken Cave Preserve
To experience the largest bat colony in the entire world, northwest of San Antonio has a cave like no other place.
Bracken Cave Preserve is home to 15-20 million Mexican free-tailed bats that visit the cave to give birth to their pups.
Overseen by the Bat Conservation International, once the bats begin to emerge from the cave it almost looks like a slow moving tornado before they ascend to the sky.
There is so much to learn about the benefits to having bats in the area for the ecosystem. Other than eating mosquitos, they will also eat moths that have been know to damage crops.
Visitors will comment on how bats look like smoke moving in the sky above the tree tops. They will stay close to one another in order to not be an easy target from predators, like hawks. Reservations are required to visit the cave between May and September.
Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area
Seeing millions of bats flying together in unison is a rare phenomenon to see, but visitors can experience it up close at the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area in Rocksprings. Located on the edge of the Hill Country, reservations must be made to go to the viewing area.
A guided tour will bring visitors to the 140-foot deep cavern where the Earth suddenly opens up. At sunset from late Spring to mid Fall, over 3 millions Mexican free-tailed bats begin emerging from the cave. Swirling like a tornado before flying into the sky together, guests are so close they can feel the wind the bats create. It is absolutely an amazing sight to see. Festivals
Attending a small town festival in Texas offers people a delightful experience to shop at local businesses, and a chance to get to know the community. There are so many festivals in Texas to see, and all are welcome to attend and enjoy the many fun activities.
Wurstfest
One of the biggest festivals, that feels like a party, is in New Braunfels at Wurstfest, a celebration of Oktoberfest.
The town of New Braunfels was established in the late 1800’s by German immigrants, and to this day it still displays a rich German culture throughout the city. To celebrate their heritage the locals celebrate with music, food, lederhosens and of course beer every year since 1961.
This epic 10 day festival also has amazing Alpine and Balvanian entertainment for festival goers to enjoy. Polk music plays from tent to tent with everyone dancing, going on carnival rides and playing games. Get tickets to experience a real sense of Balvaian heritage.
Poppy Festival
The Poppy Festival in Georgetown is a free 3 day weekend event full of live music, entertainment, food, drinks and art vendors.
Starting in 1999, Georgetown started the festival to celebrate the town’s unique story as to how it became known as the “Red Poppy Capital of Texas.”
Each year, visitors and locals enjoy a parade put on by the community that displays a pride for their town, Texas and its friendly residents.

Blanco Lavender Festival
One of the summer’s best Texas Hill Country attractions is at the Blanco Lavender Festival. Every June, the event encourages visitors to see different parts of Blanco by spreading out the different activities. A gathering of local vendors and artists set up tents and surround the Blanco courthouse downtown for the Lavender Market.
Bindseil Park hosts bands that play for visitors to enjoy while they set a blanket down to sip drinks and cool off in the shade. Visit the first commercialized lavender farm in Texas at Hill Country Lavender, open to the public only during the weekend of the festival. Visitors can buy their products of lotions, soaps and more.
Historical Missions Tour
Those who are passionate about history need to add a trip to see a Spanish colonial mission to their Texas Hill Country bucket list. The most famous mission is absolutely the Alamo, but many are not aware there are actually 35 Texas missions spread across the state.

Alamo
The phrase “remember the Alamo” is chanted across all of Texas and beyond to remind those who defended it during the struggle for Texas seeking independence from Mexico. Also known as San Antonio de Valero was built in 1718. The Alamo is centered in downtown San Antonio, and offers tours to those wanting to learn more about its true significance.
Admission to the Alamo is free, but reservations are required. Guided tours are also available for those who wish to learn more about the details of its importance.
Mission Concepción
South of San Antonio, is the oldest unrestored church in the United States. Mission Concepción is a beautiful stoned Spanish mission, and is also known as Nuestra Señora de la PurÃsima Concepción de Acuña.
Built in 1755, visitors can attend services on Sunday inside this National Historic Park, and marvel over original frescos. These frescos can be seen in 4 rooms and were painted over 250 years ago.
Mission San Jose
San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was built in 1720, and is the largest mission in Texas. This special landmark gives the illusion that guests have traveled back to the 1700’s as they walk the large grounds and view the architecture.
When they first were being built, Spanish missions were not just churches. It was a place where the community lived, traded and more with the church as the central focus. Visitors can still hear the bells for a call to worship on Sundays for services.
Roadside Attractions
Everyone in Texas loves to take a road trip. The best part of a road trip is seeing strange or unusual things that people don’t often come across. Spotting a roadside attraction is one of the best things to do in the Texas Hill Country to break up a long trip in the car. There’s no telling what you might see on the road.
World’s Largest Cowboy Boots
San Antonio is home to the World’s Largest Cowboy Boots outside the North Star Mall.
The boots may seem quirky, but what is more Texan than cowboy boots? This fun roadside attraction captures the culture of Texas.
The boots were created by the artist Bob “Daddy-O” Wade, and are an impressive 35 feet tall. It’s the perfect place for a quick photo while passing through the area.
Stonehenge II and Easter Island Head
For those who can’t travel thousands of miles to a different continent and see one of the wonders of the world, can stay in Texas and see a replica. The Hill Country Arts Foundation created a replica of the famous Stonehenge and Easter Island Heads in Ingram, Texas.
Stonehenge II was created by Al Shepperd and Doug Hill. Stonehenge II is very close in size to the real Stonehenge in England. The replica is made out of concrete compared to the original being made from stone. Another difference between the replica and the original, is that visitors are allow to walk close and all around it. There is also an Easter Island Head replica for visitors to see.
Worlds Largest Spur
Once again, Texas loves to highlight its culture with references to cowboys. One of the fun Texas Hill Country attractions to see on a road trip is in Lampasas. The World’s Largest Spur is 35-feet high and 20-feet wide.
The spur was registered into the Guinness Book of World Records in 2017.
It can be seen from the road, but there is also a large parking lot available. Take the time to get a picture and walk around to see this famous road side attraction.
Market Days & Farmer’s Markets
The best way to support the community is to shop local, and there is no better place to do that than stopping by a local market. Stop by one of the many flea markets and farmer’s markets on the weekend, and see if maybe something catches your eye. Shoppers can get a great deal all while supporting neighbors of the community.
Fredericksburg Trade Days
When arriving to Sunday Farms for Fredericksburg Trade Days, visitors will see that it is quite the spectacle. There are so many vendors with items such as collectibles, food, home decor, furniture, antiques, clothing and more to look and search through. This flea market has vendors located in 7 restored barns and others have booths outside.
When arriving, there is a $5 fee for parking that goes to a local charity. The trade days are the 3rd weekend of each month Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Visitors can expect around 350 vendors. Prepare to spend some time visiting the many different booths to find something great to purchase. Also, enjoy music and entertainment inside the beirgarten for each of the trade days.
Boerne Market Days
On the second weekend of the month on Saturday and Sunday, travel to another small town for some local shopping. The Boerne Market Days is a great way to start the weekend by casually walking and shopping at some of the best local products and crafts.
Visitors can expect vendors to display items for sale such as small business clothing boutiques, art, jewelry, outdoor decor, baked goods and more. Shop around while listening to live music in the historical district in downtown Boerne. It’s the perfect place to do early holiday or birthday shopping when searching for something unique.
Dripping Springs Farmer’s Market
Shop for fresh and in season fruits and vegetables at this amazing farmer’s market in the Texas Hill Country.
Stopping by the Dripping Springs Farmer’s Market is the best way to break up the week, as it is only open on Wednesdays in the afternoon.
Their mission is to bring the community together by supporting the local agricultural producers selling quality products directly to their buyers.
Shoppers can expect to find raw fruits and vegetables along with prepared foods and handmade crafts. There is also live music while wandering through the many vendors.
Fishing
When it comes to fishing, the Texas Hill Country has many options to choose from. There are over 70 Texas State Parks that offer fishing, and not many people realize they will not need a fishing license to fish inside these parks. Between the rivers, creeks and lakes there are some amazing locations to visit when looking to catch a fish.
Sabinal River
The Sabinal River runs between the small towns of Vanderpool and Utopia deep in the Texas Hill Country.
To find large amounts of Guadalupe bass, largemouth bass and sunfish, fishing is best near Lost Maples State Natural Area and the town of Sabinal.
Also in the area to fish at is Utopia Park Lake. The lake is fully stocked with rainbow trout, catfish and bass. Fishing is free to do in the park unless visitors are picnicking in the park.
Guadalupe River State Park
Below the Canyon Lake Dam, the Texas Parks and Wildlife stocks the river year round with freshwater trout. In the fall and winter, rainbow and brown trout are stocked in the river. Native to the area, fishing for Rio Grande perch and Guadalupe bass are also very popular catches.
At Camp Huaco Springs, trout anglers will have free access in December to March. Non motorized boats like rafts and kayaks are accepted while fishing, or fishing on the bank is allowed. Many fisherman enjoy wading in the park since the river can accommodate. Make plans and bring the gear to this great fishing spot.

One of the smallest towns in Texas has a population of 3 neighbors. The town of Luckenbach was first started as a trading post in 1849. The most popular place to visit is a building that serves as a Post Office, General Store and a place to grab a beer. The building has also become a well known dancehall in Texas.

Round Rock Donuts has had a reputation for their delicious donuts since the 1920’s.
Their donuts are all handmade and yeast risen, which gives it a yellow tint. On any given day, the building has a line wrapped around the block with locals and tourist ready to get their hands on the tasty treat.
The “Texas-sized” donut weighs 2 lbs and is available in glazed or chocolate flavored. Try this sweet treat suitable for anytime of the day, but get there early on the weekend to avoid a long wait.

Largest Pizza in Texas
The Guinness Book of World Records includes the “largest commercially available pizza,” and it just happens to be in Texas! Dirt Road Cookers in Hondo has created a 6 to 12-foot long pizza that is actually a mobile service. For any special occasion like a wedding, party, reunion and more consider hiring this wood-fire pizza service.
Dirt Road Cookers offers a large selection of toppings including brisket, pepperoni, chicken, sausage and more. To make the pizza more special, ask for a design or text on the pizza. Film Locations
From rom-coms to horror movies, cult classics and television shows, Texas has seen several movie stars visit the Lone Star State. Small towns make for the perfect backdrop with adorable downtown squares, and southwestern styled buildings.
Dazed and Confused
The movie Dazed and Confused gave actor Matthew McConaughey his big break. Many of the film set locations can be found all over Austin. The iconic quote “Alright, Alright, Alright” was filmed at Top Notch on Burnet Road. Visitors can still visit this location and order their own hamburger.
Other locations in the movie include the emporium that is actually Violet Crown Plaza. Also, while the moon tower in the movie was only made for the set, there is a real moon tower in Zilker Park.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The original 1974 horror film, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre was filmed in a house that is now a restaurant.
In Kingsland, visitors can grab a meal inside the two story building of what was one used as a movie set. Visitors should look for references to the movie throughout the restaurant.
The biggest reference is a large dummy that sits near the window that looks like the character “Grandpa.” All fans of classic horror films should stop by to see for themselves.
Michael
Often in movies there is a romantic dance between the 2 leading characters or someone spontaneously breaks out in a dance.
Inside Gruene Dancehall in New Braunfels, the movie Michael with John Travolta as an angel on earth, filmed a scene at the famous dancehall.
He’s seen selecting a song on a jukebox, then breaking out into a full dance. In no time at all the women start to join him on the floor. Next time you’re visiting this legendary dancehall, look for shots of the scene from the movie.
Birdwatching
Texas is an amazing place to visit for birdwatching enthusiasts. Between owls, the gold-cheeked warbler, great blue herons and black-capped vireos there are many unique birds to observe and photograph.
Inks Dam Fish Hatchery
With a bird blind that is easy to access and allows visitors to observe over 250 bird species, take a trip to Burnet to visit Inks Dam Fish Hatchery.
The hatchery’s entrance is free to enter and is open Monday to Friday, with Federal holiday’s as an exception.
Inks Dam Fish Hatchery sits on 70-acres with wildlife viewing areas and trails for hiking and biking. The popular bird blind is conveniently located next to the visitor center. In the winter, visitors can see bald eagles and throughout the year visitors can see wild turkey, golden-fronted woodpecker and more.
Bring the camera and binoculars when spending time at this great birdwatching hotspot.
Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory
Nearby a very unexpected area in Austin, is another birdwatching hotspot that sees thousands of birds each year. Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory is next to the waste water facility, Austin Water Center. It is one of most well known places to observe almost 400 different species of birds.
Popular birds seen in the area include ruddy ducks, American coots and swainson’s hawk. Rare sights include brown thrasher, pectoral sandpiper, brown thrasher and many more. When arriving to the bird observatory area, an I.D must be presented, and it is free to enter from 6 am to 9 pm.
Cooks Slough Sanctuary and Nature Center
In the western part of the Texas Hill Country, Uvalde has a beautiful park for passionate birdwatchers to visit.
Cooks Slough Sanctuary and Nature Center has almost 300 species of birds documented in the park. It is free to enter, and is open from sunrise to sunset.
With the park including 25-acres of wetlands and forest it attracts many different types of birds year round.
The species documented in the park include rose-breasted grosbeak, great egret, black tern, black-capped vireo and many more. There are viewing stations and shaded areas to rest.
Helicopter Tours
There are so many Hill Country Texas things to do that can make for a memorable trip. Consider taking a tour that can show a different perspective of Texas that many people have never seen.
