Waterfalls at Pedernales Falls State Park, TX

Pedernales Falls State Park, TX continues to attract thousands of visitors throughout the year due to its beautiful landscape and scenic waterfalls. The most popular waterfall to see in the state park and is easy to get access, is absolutely Pedernales Falls.

Pedernales Falls

Thanks to the Pedernales River that runs through the state park, visitors are able to experience one of the best waterfalls in Texas. Getting to Pedernales Falls is an easy 10-to-15-minute walk on a dirt and gravel path from a large nearby parking lot.

At the end of the path, you’ll come to an overlook with benches and a view of the water. To really see the waterfalls, you’ll need to follow the steps down to the water. Enjoy exploring by carefully climbing on the boulders around the water. You’ll see signs everywhere near the falls that swimming is strictly not allowed at the waterfall.

Beneath the cliff, the river flows into a calm turquoise pool before cascading around limestone boulders that have been shaped by the force of water over time. I’ve been to Pedernales Falls many times over the years, and in my opinion, winter and spring are the best time to visit to see the waterfalls. The waterfall tends to look it’s best when the area has had a fair amount of recent rainfall or at least is not approaching a drought.

Consider calling the park for current water level conditions. If it’s late summer or early fall, droughts are very common. Other times of the year, the area can even experience a flash flood! Click to see updates on water levels of the Pedernales River.

Twin Falls

If you have time, check out this other easy hike to another one of the waterfalls in Texas at Twin Falls. Located off a short .5-mile loop, this smaller waterfall is nice to see, but not as dramatic as Pedernales Falls. The water is fed from a nearby spring. If I’m going to give you an honest review, it’s much smaller, a bit overgrown and a little underwhelming.

However, I know that during different times of the year, waterflow can change. So, you’ll have to check it out and decide for yourself if it’s worth seeing. Luckily, it’s a short trail, and it’s still a great excuse to see more of the park.

Moderate to Challenging Hiking Trails

If you’re looking for more challenging trails, you have options and an opportunity for a backpacking adventure.

For a challenging trail, combine Juniper Ridge and Wolf Mountain Loop for a total of 14 miles through the hill country. Juniper Ridge is more of a narrow and rocky path that mountain bikers can also use and can be a bit technical. The Wolf Mountain section has wider trails and some great views.

Bring a water filter with you in case you decide to take the Jones Spring Trail. Located near Wolf Mountain, you can fill up your water bottle in the small spring. Remember to always filter the water, just in case.

Where to Swim

As tempting as it may be, swimming at the waterfall is absolutely not allowed. If you’re looking to go swimming, or let your pet go swimming, there is a designated swimming spot in the park. The swimming area is part of the Pedernales River, downstream from the falls, and there’s plenty of space to spread out.

There’s a large parking lot with bathrooms before you make your way down to the water using a short .25-mile walk. It also gets very busy with visitors looking to cool off from the heat, so it’s best to expect a crowd, especially on the weekends.

Typically, in the summer, the water is very pleasant, clear and calm. If you’re going swimming in the late summer or early fall, avoid areas that are stagnant especially if you see algae in the water. Stay in areas where the water is moving.

Camping Sites

Camping at Pedernales Falls State Park, TX is a fantastic way to fully experience its natural beauty, whether you’re in an RV or looking for a backpacking adventure. The park offers 70 campsites with electric hookups (30 amps), making it a great spot for RV campers who want comfort while being surrounded by nature.

The primitive campsites can be reached by hiking 2 to 3 miles along the scenic trails. Wake up to stunning hill country views and a night full of stars. No matter the time of year, bring plenty of water. Be prepared for rocky terrain, and also check water levels before visiting, as the river can rise quickly after rain.

Horseback Riding

When you’re ready to go horseback riding at Pedernales Falls State Park, TX you and your horse can venture through 10 miles of rugged trails. The trails are perfect for experienced riders looking for a challenge. The rocky terrain and steep slopes make for an exciting time while horseback riding in the Hill Country. It will require steady footing, so horses should be shoed for better traction.

Water troughs are available at the trailer parking area and halfway through the trail, ensuring horses stay hydrated during the ride. You must bring your own horse to the state park and present a current Coggins test at the office. Be prepared for limited shade and rough conditions. Early morning or late afternoon rides, especially in the warmer months are the best option.
