What to Expect During Your Visit

What sets Barton Springs Pool apart from some of the other best swimming holes in Austin, is its rich history and natural beauty. Spanning three acres, the pool reaches a depth that ranges from shallow to 18 feet deep. Strong swimmers should try to the diving board in the deep end.

The water temperature hovers around a cool 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit, providing a perfect escape from the Texas heat. Plus, unlike chlorinated pools, the water at Barton Springs is free from harsh chemicals, offering a more natural and pleasant swimming experience.

This natural swimming pool in Austin, TX is essentially a concreted spring, so don’t expect conditions like a standard city pool. When I first entered the pool in the shallow area, there was a buildup of algae on the floor of the pool, and it can get slippery.

When it comes to finding a spot to relax, there are plenty of grassy areas surrounding the pool where you can lay out a towel and soak up the sun. Large trees provide ample shade, making it a comfortable place to spend an entire day.

You’ll also notice on the far side of the pool there is a dam for excess water to flow into Barton Creek. Barton Creek then leads to Lady Bird Lake.
