The ziplining in Austin is actually not located close to the downtown area. You’ll drive northwest to the city of Leander where you’ll find Lake Travis Zipline Adventures, opened since 2011.

It’s right next to one of the most quiet and scenic parts of Texas, the Hill Country. If you’d like to see more of Texas, there are plenty of things to do in the Hill Country that make for a great day trip from Austin.

What to Expect When Going Ziplining

Lake Travis Zipline Adventures is only open from March until November. This zipline course is a mixture between canopy and adventure style. The first 2 zip lines are short and take you through the trees, while the next 3 are long, fast and above the tree line.

The tours last for 3 hours and you’ll have 2 guides with you at all times. They will get you geared up and go over all the safety information with you. Our guides were fantastic and made sure we were always laughing and having a good time. Make sure you bring cash to tip them afterwards. Be prepared for uphill hiking to each Lake Travis ziplining station.

Be sure to book your tour in advance and check out their website for updates. Occasionally they will have promos for kids, weekday tours and even groups. They also offer sunset and night tours.

Check In

You must arrive 30 minutes before the start of your tour. When you check in at their front desk, you’ll have to be weighed to make sure you meet their requirements of weighing between 70-250 pounds. I wasn’t thrilled about being weighed in their lobby, but they do their best to be discrete during this process.

After you’ve signed your waivers, be sure to use the bathroom and check out their property. They have yard games, hammocks and a private area to take photos of their private Lake Travis beach. You’ll have access to their property the entire day so if you wanted to enjoy Lake Travis, swimming is a great option after your tour.

Other places on Lake Travis will charge you an entrance fee to access their beach, so this is a great opportunity to get the most out of your experience.

Boat Ride

Before you start your tour of ziplining, you and your group will take a short boat ride to “Zip Island.” The boat ride is maybe 5 minutes long, and it goes very slow. Take some photos of the lake and start looking for the zip lines above the tree line. You’ll get a vantage point of how high you’ll be soon enough.

Short Ziplines

This was my first time ever ziplining and to be honest, I was very nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. After a short walk, our group came to the first zip line. This was a great warm up to get you used to the experience. Soon you’ll be ready for the faster and higher zip lines.

The first two are canopy ziplines that are short, slow and take you between the trees. It was very relaxing, and I appreciated that we weren’t too high up from the ground. This is also a great way to prepare your camera holding skills if you plan to record yourself on the bigger zip lines. Going with a group is always great because you can record each other as you take off or land on the platform.

Longest Ziplining in Texas

Get ready for some hiking and adrenaline! You’ll slowly make your way up the hill and get beautiful views of the lake. These zip lines are much longer, faster and above the trees. The first longer zip line is called the Leap of Faith. It is 1,800 ft long and guests will get a maximum speed of 55 mph.

Next zip line is the Line of Majesty. This was my favorite Lake Travis ziplining experience because you actually go high above the water and fly across to another island. This zip line is 1,600 feet long and the maximum speed is 50 mph. It was such a cool experience because there were boats below watching us. Even though it was high up, I felt secure the entire time.

Then there is the longest Lake Travis ziplining experience that you will find in Texas! The Double Barrell Shotgun is 2,640 feet, half a mile long! Not only is it the longest zip line, but it also has 2 zip lines side by side so that you can race someone to the bottom. This last zip line also goes over the water and has a maximum speed of 65 mph!

Food and Drinks

Once you’ve completed your last Lake Travis ziplining, you’ll land near the concession stand where there are snacks and drinks. The views here are spectacular. Grab a beer and toast to one completed thing on your bucket list. After this, you’ll make your way down the hill, back on the boat and on the Lake Travis beach you started at.

The Oasis

If you’re needing a full meal and want to see more of the area, there are some options. Since you’ll already be at Lake Travis, the Oasis is a great place to stop by for a bite to eat. Most people don’t focus on the food though, it’s the view of the lake that is one of a kind.

My Personal Review

I seriously had such a blast with Lake Travis Zipline Adventures. I could not recommend them enough. We did a double date in mid-March and the temperature was perfect for it. Hiking to some of the spots was sometimes pretty tiring, and I couldn’t imagine doing it in the summer heat. Make sure you are hydrated.

If we had come in the summer, we absolutely would have taken advantage of their private beach since the water at Lake Travis is gorgeous. If you do decide to go swimming, keep a cooler of food and drinks in your car, bring some water shoes, bathing suits, lounge chairs and towels.
